The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Finding His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
