The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
