Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably definitely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for others, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and direct reality that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump arise during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the best parts of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the highest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to what makes it distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a combination that committed American Christians ought to accept.
